Preferring a slice-of-life style, I chose to concentrate my photography in the field of photojournalism, where the whole world is the studio. My subjects are people: lifestyles and personalities professions and concerns, their hometowns, the landscapes and daily lives. Capturing a moment where subject and destination meets good lighting is the outcome and benefit of a commitment to this visual form of expression.
I am based in Northampton, Mass. a college town in the western Massachusetts area known as the Pioneer Valley. It lies near the crossroads of I- 91 between Springfield, Mass and Vermont; and I-90, the Massachusetts Turnpike between Boston and Albany, NY Practically the geographic center of New England, the location is accessible to anywhere in the region within a day's travel.
In my photojournalism career, I've been a shooter at several newspapers, a photojournalism instructor and a photo editor. Newspaper positions include the Springfield (Mass) Union-News, Providence (RI) Journal, Worcester (Mass.) Telegram and the Antioch (Calif.) Daily Ledger. I began at a weekly paper in New Jersey, the Ridgewood News. I was a photo editor at Associated Press in Los Angeles and a photojournalism instructor at San Francisco State College and Westfield State College.
For one week in May 2003 I participated in a digital photojournalism event called America 24/7 - A Week In the Life of America, resulting in publication in that book. A state book will be published later in 2004. I was a photographer/interviewer for Home of the Brave, book of stories about homeless families in the San Francisco Bay Area and Women & Work: Photographs and Writings, and published in Best of Photojournalism/10.
I work almost exclusively with a digital camera, although I still use film 35mm and medium film cameras. Pictures I make on assignment can be provided over high speed internet connection. I currently photograph stories, portraits, events, sports and work has appeared or been commissioned by the following: Boston Globe, USA today, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, University of Massachusetts, Associated Press, AARP, People, Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, Gatorade, Science Magazine, Chronicle of Higher Education, Mount Holyoke College, Nike Tennis Camp, MassLive web site, Smith College, W.F. Young, Inc, Mobility Magazine, The Guardian of London.
I am a Journalism graduate of Utica College in upstate New York and also attended the New England School of Photography in Boston.
